Francis Poulenc dramatizes the real-life saga of the Martyrs of Compiègne in his opera “Dialogues of the Carmelites” In honor of its U.S. But as a novice nun, Blanche discovers that the convent is no sanctuary: It is a place where faith is tested - and sisterhood is a bond forged in blood. So she flees inside the walls of a Carmelite convent, hoping to find the peace she cannot master in herself. And the world as Blanche knows it is coming to a sudden, violent end. France is in the grips of the Reign of Terror.
